Forty years ago, Tom's five year old
daughter asked him to paint with her with a new set of eight
watercolors. That evening, Tom was introduced to painting and
enjoyed the experience, especially painting with his daughter, Kathy.
A friend encouraged him to paint using the more standard tools of the
artists: tube paints, watercolor paper and brushes. What followed
was a brief period of very primitive painting, with no instruction or
study of books and literature on technique, composition, values or color
mixing. Soon other interest and concerns of his profession took
first place in Tom's life and the brushes were put away.
He retired in August of 1996 and the
following February, he decided to rekindle the interest in watercolor
painting. He was interviewed and became a student of the late
artist Guy Slover. Tom studied a year under Mr. Slover.
Tom has also studied under
Gifford Nicolaides and Joseph Fettingis. Additional workshops
include Pat Aube Gray, Bobbie Brown Marsh, Bill Leonardd, Daniel
Blakeman and Elizabeth Ellison. Tom continues his art education
under Nancy McDonald of Roane State Community Collage. |
